Former MPR Secretary-General Used Corruption Proceeds for Home Renovation and Child's Wedding

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has stated that former Secretary-General of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ma’ruf Cahyono allegedly used a portion of the gratuities he received to finance his child’s wedding reception. “A sum of money is suspected to have been used to fund the wedding reception of suspect MC’s child in November 2020,” said Acting Director of Investigations at the KPK, Achmad Taufik Husein, at the KPK’s Merah Putih Building in Jakarta on Thursday, 9 July 2026. Furthermore, the KPK suspects that Ma’ruf spent approximately Rp1.9 billion from the gratuities to renovate his private residence in Gandul, Depok, West Java. Taufik stated that the total gratuities Ma’ruf is suspected of receiving during his tenure as MPR Secretary-General reached Rp37.8 billion. The KPK had previously announced the commencement of an investigation into the gratuity case related to the procurement of goods and services within the MPR Secretariat General on 20 June 2025. On 23 June 2025, the KPK began examining several witnesses and announced it had named a state official as a suspect. The KPK then revealed on 3 July 2025 that the suspect in the case was Ma’ruf Cahyono. On Thursday, 9 July 2026, the KPK detained Ma’ruf Cahyono at the KPK Detention Centre branch of the Merah Putih Building for investigative purposes.
