Former KPK Leader Proposes DPR Form an Oversight Committee for Asset Forfeiture

The former Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Amien Sunaryadi, believes that Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) should form an Oversight Board for Asset Forfeiture once the Asset Forfeiture Bill is enacted. He explained that the primary responsibility for supervising the implementation of the Asset Forfeiture Law lies with the DPR RI, specifically Commission III, which oversees the legal sector.

However, Amien provided an alternative option in the event that the heavy workload of Commission III makes intensive direct supervision difficult. “If Commission III’s workload is too high and requires a supervisor for day-to-day and detailed monitoring, Commission III could form a committee or commission, similar to the Prosecution Commission, Kompolnas, or similar bodies, through said legislation,” Amien stated during a Public Hearing (RDPU) with Commission III of the DPR RI at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday (14/9).

He emphasised that the existence of this committee or oversight board must be positioned as an extension representing Commission III of the DPR RI, meaning its mandate and reporting lines must be clearly formulated within the Asset Forfeiture Law.

According to Amien, the oversight board must focus on evaluating the achievement of the regulation’s objectives and identifying which articles within the Asset Forfeiture Law are functioning effectively, partially, or are stalled in the field.

“If the oversight board represents Commission III, it must also be stipulated that they are required to submit their reports to Commission III every three months,” Amien asserted.
