Former KPK Leader: Asset Forfeiture Law Will Not Work Effectively If Law Enforcement Officials Are Problematic

Jakarta, VIVA – Former leader of the Corruption Eradasting Commission (KPK), Erry Riyana, believes that the Asset Forfeiture Law will not yield positive results if the law enforcement officials implementing it are problematic.

According to him, improvements to officials and law enforcement practices must also be a priority. He argued that a good law implemented by bad law enforcement is no better than a bad law implemented by good law enforcement.

“Therefore, I want to invite us all to focus on how to improve law enforcement and the enforcement process itself,” said Erry Riyana during a meeting with Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) regarding the Asset Forfeiture Bill at the parliamentary complex, Jakarta, on Monday.

In principle, he supports the concept of asset forfeiture. However, he cautioned that the regulations should not be implemented too hastily or too broadly, especially since various existing provisions can already lead to differing interpretations among law enforcement officers.

He noted that Indonesia currently possesses numerous regulations, and interpretations can vary between different enforcement agencies.
