Former Iranian President Ahmadinejad Reported Alive
Latest reports say former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is alive and has been moved to a safe location after an alleged assassination attempt. Iran International reported exclusively that Ahmadinejad survived the suspected attack. ‘Former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is alive after the assassination attempt, according to a source familiar with the information to Iran International on Tuesday,’ the outlet wrote. ‘The source said Ahmadinejad was not injured and has been moved to a safe place,’ the report continued. Over the weekend, as Israeli strikes were underway, various Iranian media reported conflicting information about Ahmadinejad’s fate. Some claimed he had died, while others could not confirm the claim. Ahmadinejad is said to be unharmed despite an assault involving the United States and Israel targeting senior leadership and Iran’s military infrastructure. The media cited a statement from a close aide to Ahmadinejad: ‘I am in touch with him. All is well,’ the adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said. He also revealed that a building linked to his security detail came under attack. ‘Three of his guards, members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), were killed,’ he added. ‘His own residence remained unaffected and was not targeted, about 100 metres from that building,’ he noted. Ahmadinejad served as Iran’s president from 2005 to 2013. His bid to run again in the 2017 presidential election was not approved for constitutional reasons. After leaving office, he was appointed as a member of the Expediency Discernment Council by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in 2013. He had previously served as Tehran’s mayor from 2003 to 2005.
