Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Ambassador to Germany from 2009-2013, Eddy Pratomo, passed away on Wednesday (29/4) at the age of 72.

The news of the passing of the Dean of the Faculty of Law at Pancasila University and Professor of Maritime Law at Diponegoro University was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a social media post.

“May the good deeds of the late be accepted by God Almighty, and may his family be granted strength and patience,” wrote the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Instagram.

Eddy Pratomo was an international law expert who made significant contributions to strengthening bilateral relations between Indonesia and Germany, including the commemoration of 60 years of diplomatic ties, and was actively involved in maritime boundary negotiations.

The senior diplomat also served as Director General of Legal Affairs and International Agreements at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as the President’s Special Envoy for the determination of Indonesia-Malaysia maritime boundaries.

He also held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Law at Pancasila University from 2020 until his death in 2026.

In May last year, Eddy was nominated by the Indonesian government to serve as a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the term 2026-2035.

ITLOS is an independent international court established under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

The court is tasked with resolving disputes related to the interpretation and application of UNCLOS and issuing decisions on cases concerning the exploration and exploitation of marine resources, protection of the marine environment, and other maritime law issues.

Based in Hamburg, Germany, ITLOS plays an important role in maintaining order and justice in the global utilisation of the seas.

Eddy’s nomination as an ITLOS judge, according to the government, is an effort by Indonesia to reflect the interests of developing countries - especially in the Southeast Asian region.

However, Indonesia’s hopes were dashed after Eddy passed away before the election of seven ITLOS judge positions scheduled for June in New York, USA.

The rare diplomat who never tired of continuing his education, according to former Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi, and the author of the book “Diplomat Kesasar”, died at Mandaya Hospital in Tangerang, Banten, on the morning of 29 April 2026, at the age of 72.
