The Danantara Investment Management Agency (BPI Danantara) plans a major transformation in the heart of the capital. The former Hotel Sultan building, located in the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) complex in Jakarta, is confirmed to be demolished to make way for the construction of a new iconic area for Indonesia.

Head of BPI Danantara, Rosan Roeslani, revealed that the plan is part of a comprehensive redesign of the entire GBK area, which spans approximately 200 hectares.

‘At this moment, I cannot say much, but the plan is to turn it into a new area. Eventually, yes (it will be demolished),’ Rosan stated at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Monday (22/6/2026).

Rosan explained that the project not only targets the former Hotel Sultan site but also includes a complete revitalisation of the golf course and other supporting facilities within the GBK area. The goal is to create an international-standard district that delivers a tangible economic impact for the community.

Although the old building will be razed, Rosan confirmed that accommodation functions will still be available in the new area. In fact, the commercial lodging capacity is projected to be larger than before.

‘Among other things, there will certainly be hotels there, and not just one. So, this will indeed become a new icon for Indonesia,’ he added.

Regarding operational management once the ambitious project is completed, the government plans to collaborate with state-owned enterprises (BUMN) in the aviation and tourism sectors. Rosan mentioned Injourney and Meru as strong candidates to manage the area.

‘Later, for its management, we will use Injourney, Meru, and others. Meru is already very good,’ Rosan concluded.

This move marks a new chapter in the management of state assets in the strategic Senayan area, which is expected to enhance Jakarta’s appeal as a world-class business and tourism destination.
