Former Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda has revealed the condition for Indonesia to become a mediator in the US–Israel–Iran conflict. He said there must be a willingness from both sides.

He disclosed this after a national discussion hosted by President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, 3 March 2026. Hassan said that to become a mediator there must be a willingness from both parties. At present, he has not seen signs of such willingness.

‘We are not discussing whether Indonesia is capable or not. That is the initial thought. In other words, to become a mediator there must also be acceptance from the two warring parties. And we have not seen signs of that,’ Hassan said.

Separately, Foreign Minister Sugiono reiterated Indonesia’s readiness to mediate the Middle East conflict. That said, he returned responsibility to the parties involved.

‘Yes, as has been stated, if both sides are willing, then we — the President — are prepared to act as mediator. But if there is such a view, we will leave it to them,’ he said.

In this regard, he emphasised that Indonesia offers to be a bridge to prevent further escalation. ‘What is certain is that Indonesia wants to be in a position where we can act as a bridge across differences, offering our readiness, offering ourselves. That’s all,’ he said.

Earlier, the mediator offer was also conveyed by Sugiono when he spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the phone. Sugiono said Indonesia stood ready to facilitate mediation or dialogue to prevent further casualties.

‘Indonesia is ready to play a constructive role in advancing peace, including offering our willingness to facilitate dialogue or mediation, with the shared aim of preventing further escalation and stopping the needless loss of innocent lives,’ Sugiono said, via his official X account, on Tuesday, 3 March 2026.

Furthermore, Sugiono urged all parties to show restraint and pursue de-escalation. He urged all sides to uphold dialogue and diplomacy so that regional stability can be restored.
