Former Foreign Minister Highlights that the UN Lacks Power Amid US-Israel-Iran Conflict
JAKARTA, Kompas.com - Former Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda has highlighted the United Nations’ lack of power amid the conflict between the United States and Israel and Iran. His remarks were delivered after attending a meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and former presidents and vice presidents, senior diplomats, and the general chairmen of political parties, on Tuesday night (3 March 2025).
‘What are the implications for us? For the world, when the world order is no longer effective and there is no longer any avenue for a country that is attacked militarily to appeal to anyone,’ Hassan said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta, Tuesday, cited from Kompas TV broadcast.
‘Because the UN has ceased to play a role and the rules-based order is only on paper, and indeed there is no coercive power, especially when it concerns the great powers,’ he added.
After all, Indonesia and other countries find themselves in a dilemma following the US and Israel’s attack on Iran.
‘This is a matter and a dilemma faced by many countries, not only us, so the President considers it important to communicate the problems faced by the government to us who were asked to come tonight,’ Hassan said.
‘The potential impact of this war on the world economy, especially in terms of supply, oil and gas, we must calculate what its effect would be on us from that perspective alone,’ he explained.
‘The President describes how we must navigate our lives—not just two reefs, but several reefs—and that is not easy,’ Hassan said.
