Former Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda says President Prabowo Subianto will review Indonesia’s membership of the Board of Peace (BoP) in light of the escalation of the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Wirajuda disclosed this after a 3.5-hour meeting with Prabowo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta yesterday. The principal topic was the future of Indonesia’s BoP membership, with Prabowo noting that the BoP’s mandate could be weakened amid the ongoing confrontation in the Middle East. ‘The next steps are not yet decisions. He will evaluate and take the right decision in due course,’ Wirajuda said. The President also discussed the broader implications of the Gulf and Middle East tensions for global security and for the world economy, particularly the supply of oil and gas. The two leaders reportedly discussed the potential impact on Indonesia and how to respond within the framework of weak enforcement of international law when stronger powers breach rules. Prabowo invited former presidents and other senior figures to a silaturahmi gathering at Istana Negara, with attendees including Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Joko Widodo, Jusuf Kalla, Boediono and KH Ma’ruf Amin, among others. Analysts from UI, including Suzie Sudarman, cautioned that Prabowo’s mediation stance on Israel–US–Iran could be unrealistic and risk diminishing Indonesia’s standing.
