Former Condongcatur Village Head Detained, What Is the Fate of the Village Land Tenants?

Former Condongcatur Village Head Reno Candra Sangaji has been officially detained in connection with a corruption case involving village treasury land in Padukuhan Gandok. The land, totalling approximately 1,900 square metres, was leased to 17 tenants, and permanent houses have since been built on the site.

‘Currently, buildings have been erected on the land for residential purposes, totalling 17 units. These occupants dealt directly with Mr R,’ explained AKBP Haris Munandar Hasyim, Sub-Directorate 3 Head at the Yogyakarta Special Region Police’s Criminal Investigation Directorate, during a press conference at the Yogyakarta Regional Police Headquarters, Sleman, on Tuesday (30/6/2026).

Haris stated that the fate of the tenants now depends on the court’s ruling. ‘We are waiting for the court’s decision. Perhaps due to humanitarian considerations, we are still awaiting a decision regarding the assets, whether they will be confiscated for the state or otherwise. We will follow up on the buildings that have already been constructed there,’ he clarified. He noted that not all of the buildings are currently occupied, with some already vacant. ‘These are not boarding houses, but private residences,’ he added.

Haris did not detail the individual rental amounts but confirmed that the total money received by Reno exceeded Rp 1 billion. ‘The total collected from all 17 tenants was approximately Rp 1.3 billion, if I am not mistaken. This money did not go to the state treasury, but directly to the individual tenants,’ he said. Haris mentioned that the tenants claimed they were unaware the rental agreements were illegal, as the person leasing the land was a village official. ‘Yes, they felt secure because the person leasing it was the village head, a village official,’ he stated. ‘Initially, they did not know. That is why we, together with the Land and Spatial Planning Agency, are conducting outreach to villages and the community to prevent residents from being harmed. In a way, they are also victims.’

Reno has been detained since Monday (22/6) and is awaiting legal proceedings for leasing village treasury land without permission from the Governor of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X. ‘Based on the audit results from the BPKP Representative Office of Yogyakarta, the actions of the suspect caused state financial losses amounting to Rp 1,740,213,500,’ Haris said. Reno is charged under Article 2 paragraph (1) and/or Article 3 of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Corruption, as amended by Law Number 20 of 2001, in conjunction with Article 18 of the same law.
