Former Commissioner: Ideally, Kompolnas Should Have Its Own Law
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Kompolnas commissioner for the 2012-2016 period, Adrianus Meliala, supports the recommendations of the Police Reform Acceleration Commission (KPRP) regarding the strengthening of Kompolnas’s authority. To guarantee Kompolnas’s independence, he proposes that a separate law be created for Kompolnas. “If Kompolnas wants to be independent and have immunity, then ideally it should have its own law,” said Adrianus to Kompas.com on Thursday (7/5/2026). The same sentiment was expressed by Kompolnas commissioner for the 2016-2024 period, Poengky Indarti. Poengky responded positively to the KPRP’s recommendations on strengthening the National Police Commission (Kompolnas). According to her, this strengthening must also be supported by strong legal foundations. “In this momentum of Police Reform initiated by the President, it is hoped that Kompolnas can also be reformed by providing a strong legal basis in the form of a law,” said Poengky to Kompas.com on Thursday (7/6/2026). In addition, she also encourages Kompolnas to be given strong duties and authority, as well as to consist of individuals with high integrity and independence. “So that the police being supervised will become an institution that is truly professional and independent,” she stated.
