Former Colleague Exposes Dark Side of ChatGPT Boss
The trial involving billionaire Elon Musk, who is suing the creators of ChatGPT, OpenAI, has become increasingly intense and deeply personal. In a California courtroom, the leadership style of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman came under heavy fire from his former trusted aide, Mira Murati.
The former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of OpenAI explicitly stated that Altman is an unreliable leader, adding that he is often the cause of chaos within the company. This pattern of troublemaking and duplicity was revealed through shocking testimony provided by Murati via video presented to the jury during the third week of this historic trial.
In her statement, Murati accused her former boss of using manipulative communication methods and intentionally ‘creating confusion.’ ‘He has a tendency to make one statement to one person, while providing contradictory information to another,’ Murati stated during the trial, as reported by The Guardian.
Elon Musk’s legal team presented evidence in the form of text messages between Altman and Murati during a period of peak crisis. Amidst the high tension, Altman, facing a difficult situation, reportedly asked Murati, ‘Can you give me a little hint? Is everything going to be fine or the opposite?’ Without hesitation, Murati replied firmly, ‘The direction being taken is very wrong.’
Murati’s allegations regarding Altman’s character were not isolated; similar testimony was provided by several other former high-ranking OpenAI officials, including Ilya Sutskever. The OpenAI co-founder and former Chief Scientist was called by Musk’s legal team to confirm Altman’s past behaviour. Musk’s lawyer, Steven Molo, questioned Sutskever regarding his comments to the board of directors prior to Altman’s dismissal, specifically asking if Sutskever had ever stated that Altman ‘has a pattern of continuous lying, belittling his executives, and inciting conflict among them.’
