JAKARTA (JP): Former flyweight champion Herry Maitimu has been called upon to coach the national boxing team for the 17th Southeast Asia Games in Chiang Mai in December.
The Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association picked Herry for his success in handling the Jambi boxing team in national and international events. Herry, a Maluku native who joined the Jambi team in 1985, has been assisting Hengky Nanlohy groom the province's talents after hanging up his gloves in 1989.
Herry dominated the national flyweight scene throughout 1980s. He last won the National Games gold medal in 1989.
"It's truly a distinguished award for Jambi, since Herry is an idol here," Jambi boxing association chairman Syamsaimun Tjokro was reported by Antara as saying on Monday. (amd)
