Former Bezos AI Experts Unveil New Physics-Based Model
Two artificial intelligence (AI) experts, previously projected to lead an ambitious project owned by Jeff Bezos, have now launched a new system designed to understand the universe through a physics-based approach rather than language.
Anima Anandkumar, a professor at Caltech and former director at Nvidia, together with her husband Benedikt Jenik, an AI infrastructure engineer, were initially expected to lead Project Prometheus. The company founded by the Amazon founder focuses on using AI for engineering and manufacturing to revolutionise the production of computers, aircraft, and cars.
However, the research couple chose a different path by establishing Accelerated Understanding Inc. They have introduced an AI model that works in a fundamentally different way from popular systems such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude.
Accelerated Understanding Inc claims to have developed an AI model capable of handling 5 trillion pieces of data in a single prompt. This capacity is approximately 5 million times larger than the capabilities of current leading models from Google or Anthropic. To illustrate, this capacity is equivalent to reading Tolstoy’s War and Peace 5 million times in a single session.
The main difference lies in the architecture. While ChatGPT uses the Transformer architecture to predict the next word in a sentence, this new model uses neural operators technology. This technology was pioneered by Anandkumar to predict physical phenomena in space and time.
“A language-centric view of intelligence places humans at the centre. Placing physics at the centre is a nature-centric view,” said Anandkumar in an exclusive interview ahead of the company’s corporate launch.
The company is targeting the enterprise sector rather than consumer services. Several potential uses of this technology include accelerating weather prediction, advancing AI beyond conventional physics theory, and supporting engineering and manufacturing applications.
Support for Anandkumar’s vision has also come from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Huang was reportedly very enthusiastic when he saw how neural operators could accelerate weather prediction and push AI to outperform conventional physics theory.
Currently, Accelerated Understanding Inc has established partnerships with computing providers to run their hardware clusters, although Anandkumar has not yet been willing to disclose the identity of these strategic partners.
