Former Armed Forces Commander Wiranto Remembers Try Sutrisno: Obedient to the Constitution
JAKARTA — Former Armed Forces Commander (ABRI) Wiranto has recalled the late Wakil Presiden (Vice President) Try Sutrisno as a humble and constitutionally obedient figure. Wiranto described Try Sutrisno as someone who consistently prioritised the interests of the people over his own personal concerns.
“His humility, obedience to the constitution, his struggle that always defended truth and guided by his convictions,” said Wiranto whilst paying respects at Try Sutrisno’s residence on Monday, 2 March 2026.
According to Wiranto, Try Sutrisno was a figure who constantly considered the best course of action for the public whilst carrying out his state duties. “And I believe that is an attitude we should indeed emulate. An attitude that needs to be exemplified, both for soldiers and for colleagues currently holding positions in state offices,” stated Wiranto, who serves as the President’s Special Adviser for Politics and Security.
The death of the former Armed Forces Commander was confirmed by Retired Lieutenant General Albertus Budi Sulistya, former head of RSPAD military hospital. “That is correct,” said the retired officer to the press on Monday.
Try Sutrisno’s body was prayed over at Sunda Kelapa Mosque before being interred at the Heroes’ Cemetery (Taman Makam Pahlawan) at Kalibata on Monday afternoon, 2 March 2026. After ritual bathing and shrouding, the body was taken from his residence at Jalan Purwakarta number 6 for burial at the Heroes’ Cemetery at Kalibata.
