Former Apple Design Chief's Ferrari Electric Car Draws Criticism
Ferrari has drawn a wave of criticism after unveiling its first electric vehicle, named the Ferrari Luce. The scrutiny extends beyond it being Ferrari’s first electric car, as the design was led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. The vehicle was developed in collaboration with LoveFrom, the design firm co-founded by Ive and Marc Newson, renowned for their work on Apple products such as the iPhone, iMac, and iPad. The Ferrari Luce was officially unveiled this week as Ferrari’s first electric model, but its design immediately sparked online debate. On social media, the Luce’s design has been compared to a vacuum cleaner, rubber sandals, and the controversial Fiat Multipla. Criticism has also come from former Ferrari executives. Former Ferrari CEO Luca di Montezemolo warned the car risks ‘destroying the legend’ of Ferrari due to its departure from the Italian brand’s core identity. The Ferrari Luce departs significantly from the brand’s traditional models. It is a four-door, five-seater electric vehicle, unlike the classic two-door coupes typically associated with Ferrari. Design-wise, the Luce adopts Apple’s signature minimalist approach. Its interior features CNC-machined aluminium, large digital displays, and a blend of physical buttons and touch interfaces said to be inspired by Apple’s design philosophy. Ferrari stated that the EV platform allows for a more spacious, comfortable, and futuristic design compared to traditional sports cars. Despite the controversy, Ferrari appears confident in its strategy. According to Reuters, as cited by KompasTekno, Ferrari considers the Luce a ‘statement product’ to introduce a new direction for the company in the electrification era. However, the market is still awaiting consumer response. Following the Luce’s launch, Ferrari’s shares dropped around 8% as investors worried the car might not be accepted by loyal fans. Production of the Ferrari Luce is scheduled to begin in 2026, forming a key part of the company’s future electrification strategy.
