Formalin Scandal in Chinese Cabbage: Authorities Launch Thorough Investigation
Authorities in China have launched an in-depth investigation following reports regarding the use of formalin to maintain the freshness of cabbage intended for human consumption. This step was taken after serious concerns emerged regarding food safety in the country, which is the world’s largest producer of cabbage.
Officials in Hebei Province, in north-eastern China, confirmed that they have verified video footage showing several individuals dipping cabbage into a chemical solution before loading it onto trucks for transport. The footage was first circulated by an environmental blogger last week.
State media reported that the police have taken legal action against the individuals involved in these illegal practices. The use of formalin—a colourless chemical known to be a carcinogen—is strictly prohibited for food preservation in China.
Local authorities are now moving swiftly to prevent public panic and restore consumer confidence by conducting spot checks in markets across the country. Investigators are also working to map how widespread this practice has become and to track the distribution of the affected vegetables.
Beijing’s Xinfadi Market, one of the capital’s primary sources of fresh produce, stated that it has conducted an internal investigation into its cabbage supply sources. Management ensured that no contaminated vegetables have entered their market.
The scandal has triggered widespread condemnation in domestic media. An editorial in the People’s Daily wrote a sharp critique, stating, “Wholesalers are only focusing on short-term economic interests while completely ignoring the lives and health of consumers. They have crossed the legal red line and violated basic moral boundaries.”
China produces more than 30 million tonnes of cabbage annually, accounting for nearly half of total global production. A large portion of this harvest is exported to neighbouring Asian countries, including Vietnam, South Korea, and Russia.
According to the American Cancer Society, high-level exposure to formalin in the workplace has been linked to several types of cancer in humans. Although the effects of small-scale exposure through food still require further research, the carcinogenic nature of this chemical makes it a serious threat to public health if misused within the food chain.
