Forex reserves drop to $14.21b

JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's net foreign exchange reserves dropped by US$21.3 million to $14.21 billion in the week ending Nov. 23 from $14.23 million in the previous week mainly due to repayments of the government's overseas debt.

Bank Indonesia said in a statement on Wednesday that gross foreign exchange reserves dropped by $10.4 million to $22.75 billion in the same week.

The amount is well above the adjusted target for net foreign exchange reserves set by the International Monetary Fund of $11.26 billion, the bank said.

The bank's reserves rose by Rp 1.38 trillion (US$185 million) to Rp 72.79 trillion on Nov. 23 due to an increase in the government's expenditure for the payment of salaries of the country's civil servants and its sovereign debts.

BI's net claims on the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency increased by Rp 279 billion to Rp 136.03 trillion, while its liquidity credits rose by Rp 258 billion to Rp 17.09 billion. The subsidy mainly went to cooperatives and farmers.

Net domestic assets increased by Rp 1.59 trillion to minus Rp 69.33 trillion. The amount is still below the adjusted target of minus Rp 39.56 trillion. (das)
