Forestry Ministry urges use of captive-bred birds in singing competitions

The Director of Species and Genetic Conservation at the Ministry of Forestry, Ahmad Munawir, has urged parties to use captive-bred birds in singing competitions to protect wild habitats. “Regulations do allow certain bird species to be taken from the wild, but quotas are limited because excessive trapping is not permitted,” he said in Bandarlampung on Thursday. He noted that the reality on the ground shows many birds are still being caught illegally and without permits, leading to a decline in wild populations and threatening the survival of wildlife in nature. According to him, many breeders have successfully bred various types of songbirds with good quality that can be used in bird singing competitions. He called on bird song enthusiasts to cooperate in preserving wild bird species by actively breeding them and using birds from captive breeding programmes.
