The Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) is strengthening the transformation of forest utilisation through inclusive and high-integrity carbon trading.

Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni, in a statement in Jakarta on Monday, emphasised that carbon trading in the forestry sector must uphold the principles of transparency, high integrity, and provide direct benefits (benefit sharing) for communities at the site level.

“Carbon is not merely a new economic commodity, but a strategic instrument to accelerate forest rehabilitation, preserve biodiversity, and support national climate targets in an accountable manner based on a scientific approach,” he said.

Secretary of the Directorate General of Sustainable Forest Management at the Ministry of Forestry, Erwan Sudaryanto, added that carbon trading is part of the transformation of forest utilisation towards more sustainable management.

“Therefore, carbon trading must be carried out with integrity, transparency, and provide fair benefits for all stakeholders,” said Erwan.

Erwan continued that the Ministry of Forestry is strengthening its regulatory foundation through the issuance of Minister of Forestry Regulation Number 6 of 2026 concerning Procedures for Carbon Trading through Greenhouse Gas Emission Offsets in the Forestry Sector.

“The regulation is expected to provide legal certainty, strengthen governance, enhance the credibility of Indonesia’s carbon market, while ensuring that carbon trading continues to support sustainable forest management,” said Erwan.
