Forestry Minister vows transparent, accountable carbon trading
“Through the regulation, the government, specifically the Forestry Ministry, is presenting a clearer, more transparent, and more trustworthy regulatory framework to support carbon trading in the forestry sector for businesses, communities, and global partners,” Antoni said in Jakarta, Wednesday.
The minister stated that one of the main breakthroughs in the regulation is the clear process from start to finish, from mitigation implementation, carbon unit measurement and calculation, validation, recording in the national system, and carbon trading transactions.
He said that all stages now have definite deadlines, providing certainty for business actors and forest management communities.
“This way, the entire process runs within an integrated, transparent, and accountable framework,” Antoni said.
He further emphasized that integrity is key. Therefore, in the regulation, the government is introducing a system to prevent double carbon accounting.
“With an approach called nesting, we ensure that every emission reduction is calculated fairly and without overlap,” he said.
“This isn’t just a technical matter. It’s about trust. Without trust, there will be no market. Without a market, there will be no incentive to protect forests,” he explained.
He hopes that in the future, carbon will become a sustainable source of financing for conservation, rehabilitation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable forest management.
“This way, the resulting economic benefits will go hand in hand with ecological and social benefits,” Antoni said.
