Forestry Minister Seen as Key to Maintaining Global Trust in Indonesia's Forest Carbon
Jakarta – Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni is considered to hold a vital role in maintaining the credibility of carbon trading in Indonesia’s forestry sector. This is because the implementation of forest carbon trading is currently carried out through an official carbon offset scheme referring to Presidential Regulation Number 110 of 2025 and Minister of Forestry Regulation Number 6 of 2026.
Director of Climate Policy Initiative Tiza Mafira stated that the Ministry of Forestry has a strategic position as the party that ensures carbon projects run according to the rules and remain trusted by the market. “The Minister of Forestry’s role is central and crucial as the main gatekeeper,” Tiza told reporters on Wednesday, 15 July 2026.
According to Tiza, this supervision is carried out through the Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK). Through this system, the Ministry of Forestry conducts the validation process while simultaneously overseeing the implementation of carbon projects to ensure they meet established standards. “Through the Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK), the Ministry of Forestry validates and oversees the running of projects to prevent double counting, thereby maintaining the trust of both domestic and international markets,” Tiza said.
She assessed that strict supervision is an important factor in preserving the integrity of Indonesia’s carbon trading. Thus, carbon projects generated from the forestry sector will have credibility in the eyes of investors and carbon buyers, both at home and abroad. Furthermore, Tiza said the prospects for Indonesia’s forestry carbon trading will be largely determined by the level of market trust in the carbon units issued. She believes that high trust could potentially increase the selling value of Indonesian carbon on the global market. “We will have to see what the market price for Indonesian forest carbon looks like, whether it is trusted enough by the market to command a premium price or not,” Tiza concluded.
