Forestry Minister Says Bromo Fire Extinguished, Area to Reopen on 20 August
The Ministry of Forestry has confirmed that the forest and land fire in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park area has been extinguished. The area will be reopened to tourists starting 20 August 2026.
This was conveyed by Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni during a working meeting of Commission IV of the House of Representatives with the Ministry of Forestry at the DPR building in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (18/8/2026). Raja Juli said the fire in the Bromo area lasted for 13 days.
“The fire that lasted for 13 days, thank God, was finally extinguished thanks to the cooperation of various ministries and institutions along with regional governments,” said Raja Juli.
He also expressed gratitude for the efforts made by all parties. He said the Bromo area would soon be reopened.
“Today I officially, on behalf of the Minister of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, announce the reopening of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park from 20 August onwards,” he said.
However, Raja Juli asked the public to participate in protecting the Bromo area. He reminded everyone to ensure that a similar incident does not happen again.
“We know how much energy and funds were exhausted, and ultimately our ecotourism was disrupted, and the community also suffered losses,” he said.
“Therefore, please take good care of it. Do not use campfires that could ignite, cigarette butts, or anything that could cause another fire in Bromo Tengger Semeru,” he continued.
Raja Juli said the firefighting effort was carried out by Manggala Agni, the TNBTS National Park Office team, BPBD, BNPB, volunteers from Masyarakat Peduli Api, as well as the TNI and Polri. The firefighting effort, he said, was supported by two BNPB water bombing helicopters and a drone sprayer helicopter from the East Java Provincial BPBD.
“The main obstacle faced in the field was the considerable distance to water sources for water bombing, which limited sorties and only two helicopters were available,” he explained.
“Based on the latest data, the burned area is estimated to have reached 1,120 hectares,” he added.
