Forestry Minister assures continuous improvement of carbon trading ecosystem

Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni has assured that the government will continue to improve the national carbon trading ecosystem on an ongoing basis. In a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday, the minister assessed that Indonesia has enormous carbon potential, but it has not yet developed optimally due to an inappropriate perspective. “I am committed to continuously improving our carbon trading ecosystem. Because we understand the potential is very large, but so far it has stalled due to differing viewpoints, so such enormous potential has been very late in being realised,” said Minister Raja Antoni. He explained that the government has issued Presidential Regulation Number 110 of 2025 concerning the Economic Value of Carbon, which was then followed by Forestry Ministerial Regulation Number 6 of 2026 as a technical rule for the forestry sector. In addition to strengthening regulations, the Ministry of Forestry has also begun opening up carbon trading opportunities in conservation areas. A pilot project is being developed in Way Kambas National Park, alongside the establishment of a National Park Funding Innovation Task Force to encourage more innovative conservation financing schemes through a blended finance approach. “We hope that these various new approaches, including carbon trading in national parks, can strengthen forest governance towards a carbon market that has high integrity and high quality,” said Raja Antoni.
