Forest Programme VI: North Kalimantan's Commitment to Protecting and Managing Mangrove Ecosystems
The Provincial Government of North Kalimantan (Pemprov Kaltara) has reinforced its commitment to the protection and management of mangrove ecosystems through a Kick-Off Meeting and Socialisation of the Implementation of Forest Programme (FP) VI held at Hotel Luminor on Tuesday, 30 June 2026. The programme is focused on the sustainable protection, conservation, and restoration of mangrove forest ecosystems, particularly in Bulungan Regency and Tana Tidung Regency.
According to North Kalimantan Governor, represented by Assistant for General Administration Taufik Hidayat, the success of the programme requires synergy and commitment from all stakeholders. “Strong synergy and commitment from all parties form an important foundation for preserving the sustainability of mangrove forest areas while improving the welfare of coastal communities in North Kalimantan,” he said.
He continued that North Kalimantan holds a strategic position in sustainable development because most of its territory is still dominated by forest areas. This condition is a shared responsibility to preserve natural resources as a buffer for life, both now and for future generations.
According to him, the forests in North Kalimantan are not only a regional asset but also a national and global asset because they function as carbon sinks, maintain biodiversity, regulate water systems, and serve as a source of livelihood for communities around forest areas. However, Taufik acknowledged that various challenges remain, ranging from land degradation, climate change, pressure on natural resources, to the need to improve community welfare.
Therefore, he said, a development approach is needed that can balance economic, social, and environmental aspects harmoniously. The North Kalimantan Provincial Government will continue to provide support through strengthening policies, cross-sector coordination, and synergy with district and city governments so that the implementation of Forest Programme VI runs optimally.
“With a spirit of collaboration, innovation, and sustainability, I am optimistic that we can realise sustainable forests, self-reliant communities, and equitable development,” he said.
The event was also attended by the Director of Forest Rehabilitation of the Directorate General of Watershed Management and Forest Rehabilitation of the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry, Nikolas Nugroho Surjobasuindro, and the Head of the North Kalimantan Forestry Service, Nur Laila.
