Forest Fires Spread, Mount Bromo Tourism Closed Completely
The Mount Bromo tourism area within the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) has been officially closed to all tourism activities following a resurgence of forest and land fires in the region.
The fire, which broke out on Thursday afternoon (10/09) in the Pengol Savanna, Ngadas Village, Sukapura District, Probolinggo Regency, has since spread to Bukit Teletubbies and Gunung Kursi as of Saturday (12/09).
The Head of the TNBTS Great Office, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, announced that the closure is effective from Saturday (12/09) until further notice, as stated in official announcement number PG.23/T.8/TU/HMS.01.07/B/09/2026.
“The closure is implemented from Saturday, 12 September 2026, until a deadline that will be communicated later, considering the development of the fire conditions, the handling and extinguishing process, and the safety of the area,” said Rudijante.
Rudijanta stated that the closure was necessary due to the expanding fire and thickening smoke, which are deemed to impair visibility, mobility, and visitor safety.
“The increasing extent of the forest fires in the Bromo TNBTS area, coupled with the dry season conditions that leave vegetation, particularly grasses, in a dry state and the potential for strong winds that can accelerate the spread of fire, is a major factor,” he added.
“Accompanied by increasingly thick smoke around the affected area, which has the potential to disrupt visibility, mobility, security, and the safety of visitors, as well as potentially hindering the fire handling and extinguishing process,” he continued.
Currently, he said, all entry points to Mount Bromo are completely closed to tourism to ensure the effectiveness of firefighting efforts and to prioritise the safety of visitors.
For visitors who have purchased entry tickets via the bromotenggersemeru.id website during the closure period, the TNBTS Great Office will provide options for rescheduling or refunds, with the specific mechanism to be announced later.
Rudijanta also emphasised that access to the fire site is strictly reserved for officers, partners, and volunteers involved in the firefighting and handling operations according to their duties and authority.
“The public and visitors are requested not to approach the fire site and to always pay attention to official information released by the TNBTS Great Office,” the announcement read.
Nevertheless, Rudijanta noted that tourism activities to Ranu Regulo can still proceed in accordance with existing regulations.
Previously, the Mount Bromo area suffered a massive fire that lasted 13 days from 3 August 2026 until it was declared fully extinguished on 14 August 2026, with the affected area reaching approximately 1,120 hectares.
