Forest Fires Spread in Mount Ijen, Extinguishing Efforts Hindered by Steep Terrain

Forest and land fires have struck the Mount Ijen area in Banyuwangi, East Java, spreading to the hiking trails leading to the Ijen Crater. Joint teams of officers and volunteers are working continuously to control the flames, which originated from the Mount Merapi Ungup-ungup area.

Extinguishing efforts are facing significant challenges due to the steep terrain, limited vehicle access, and scarcity of water supplies, alongside strong winds that facilitate the rapid spread of the fire. As of Friday (4/9/2026), the fire has reportedly reached Post 4 of the Ijen Crater Nature Tourism Park hiking trail.

The situation has also impacted tourism activities in the Ijen area. The East Java BBKSDA (Natural Resources Conservation Agency) has temporarily closed all tourist visits and hiking activities until further notice to ensure visitor safety. Additionally, trolley drivers have evacuated hundreds of trolleys, commonly used for transporting tourists and hikers’ supplies, to safer locations to avoid the fire.
