A forest fire in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) has spread to the savanna area of Mount Bromo. The fire initially broke out in the Bantengan and Jantur blocks before moving downhill towards the savanna.

TNBTS Public Relations officer, Endrip Wahyutama, stated that a joint team is continuing efforts to extinguish the flames. To prevent the fire from spreading further, officers are constructing firebreaks by cutting vegetation in the affected area.

“The fire has spread to the savanna. We are creating firebreaks with a width of 5 to 10 metres to contain it,” Endrip said. He added that the firebreak method has been quite effective in preventing the fire from expanding during the current dry season, alongside suppression efforts using the ‘gebyok’ system and jet shooters.

Authorities have not yet been able to calculate the total area of land burned since the fire started on Monday afternoon.
