Forest Fire at Ranu Kembang, Mount Semeru Climbing Route Fully Closed

The Mount Semeru climbing route has been officially closed in full starting today. The closure was implemented after a forest fire broke out in the Ranu Kembang block, near the climbing route.

Head of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Agency (BB TNBTS), Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, said the closure was carried out to ensure visitor safety. It is also intended to facilitate the firefighting process by a joint team.

“The closure is being carried out to support the smooth process of controlling and extinguishing the fire, as well as evacuating visitors still inside the area, prioritising the security and safety of visitors,” said Rudijanta, as reported by detikJatim on Wednesday (26/8/2026).

The closure applies from the time the announcement was issued until an unspecified time. TNBTS will continue to evaluate conditions on the ground before deciding to reopen the climbing route to the summit of Mahameru.

Meanwhile, prospective climbers who have purchased entry tickets online need not worry. TNBTS has provided a refund mechanism as well as rescheduling options.
