Forensic Psychologist Highlights Need to Understand Taufik Hidayat's Mindset in YTR Alleged Confinement Case

Forensic psychologist Reza Indragiri Amriel has emphasised the need to understand the mindset and emotional state of Taufik Hidayat, the suspect in the alleged confinement and abuse of a 29-year-old woman identified as YTR. The suspect was recently arrested by the West Java Regional Police after the victim managed to escape.

Reza stated that a risk assessment is crucial to uncover the five dimensions of the perpetrator’s personality. ‘It begins with understanding whether there is a history of mental disorders and substance abuse,’ he said during an appearance on the Apa Kabar Indonesia Pagi programme on tvOne.

He further noted the importance of identifying any extreme violent fantasies the perpetrator may harbour, which could be influenced by the films he watches or the literature he reads. ‘We need to know what he reads, what films he watches, what he daydreams about, and even what he dreams of. Are there extreme violent fantasies?’ Reza explained.

Additionally, the forensic psychologist highlighted the need to examine the perpetrator’s pattern of expressing anger over time. ‘Everyone can get angry, but the question is how the perpetrator expresses that anger and whether it has become a pattern over time,’ he said. Stability in education, finances, and domicile were also cited as factors that can influence an individual’s personality and ability to self-regulate within society.

Reza concluded that these five aspects of a risk assessment can provide a comprehensive picture of the perpetrator’s personality. However, he expressed hope that the police would not reveal the results of the assessment in detail, in order to ensure the perpetrator receives a heavy sentence.
