Foreign Tourist Arrivals Exceed 1.01 Million Visits in January 2026
Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS), through the Deputy for Distribution and Service Statistics, Ateng Hartono, reported that the number of foreign tourist arrivals to Indonesia in January 2026 reached 1.01 million visits.
This figure represented a 1.11 per cent increase year-on-year compared to the same period in the previous year.
“Foreign tourists arriving through major entry points declined 17.06 per cent on a monthly basis, but increased 1.1 per cent year-on-year,” Ateng said during a teleconference on Monday, 2 March 2026.
He noted that foreign tourist arrivals were recorded through several major entry points, namely international airports, international seaports, and border crossing posts (PLB).
In addition to the foreign tourist arrival indicator, BPS also monitored developments in domestic tourism travel. In January 2026, the volume of domestic tourism trips reached 102.04 million trips or declined 0.93 per cent compared to January 2025.
On the other hand, passenger movement on several transport modes continued to show growth at the beginning of this year.
BPS recorded that the number of railway transport passengers in January 2026 reached 48.10 million people or increased 10.94 per cent compared to January 2025. Growth also occurred in international air transport passengers, which reached 1.77 million people or increased 2.04 per cent year-on-year.
Meanwhile, domestic air transport passenger departures were recorded at 4.92 million people or declined 3.33 per cent compared to January of the previous year. Ateng reported that the number of domestic maritime transport passengers also declined 0.55 per cent to 2.61 million passengers.
Decline also occurred in passengers of river, lake, and ferry transport (ASDP), which was recorded at 4.29 million people or declined 3.67 per cent compared to the same period in the previous year.
BPS also noted that the quantity of goods transported using domestic maritime transport mode in January 2026 reached 37.49 million tonnes or declined 1.05 per cent compared to January 2025. Additionally, the quantity of goods transported using railway was recorded at 5.33 million tonnes or declined 7.90 per cent year-on-year.
“Meanwhile, the quantity of goods transported via domestic air transport was recorded at 53 thousand tonnes or declined 13.01 per cent compared to the same period last year,” he said.
