Foreign students off to villages

SURABAYA: At least 34 foreign students will take part in fieldwork organized by Petra Christian (UKP) private university in Magetan regency, about 170 kilometers west of here.

The overseas students -- 29 from Dongseo University in Pusan, South Korea, and five from the Netherlands -- will join 56 UKP students in the program, widely known as KKN, from July 18 to Aug. 15.

"South Korean students are taking part in a bid to boost relations between the sister cities of Surabaya and Pusan, while the Dutch students are merely interested in the program," head of UKP community services, Pietra Widiadi, told Antara on Tuesday.

Widiadi said South Korean universities also conducted similar programs aimed at empowering people in underdeveloped areas. (amd)
