Bogor Regency (ANTARA) - The Minister of Immigration and Community Empowerment (Imipas), Agus Andrianto, stated that the government is waiving overstay fees for foreign nationals (WNA) in Indonesia who are in emergency situations.

After a free health check-up event and social assistance programme as part of the 62nd Community Service Day in Pondok Rajeg, Cibinong, Bogor Regency, on Wednesday, Agus explained that the policy is provided as a form of humanity and a response to specific situations that prevent foreign nationals from leaving Indonesian territory immediately.

“This is an emergency residence permit, including exemption from overstay fees,” Agus said.

According to him, the policy also takes into account the principle of reciprocity, given that Indonesian citizens abroad receive similar treatment from other countries in certain conditions.

“Because this also applies to our citizens abroad; they receive the same treatment,” he said.

He reminded immigration officials to strengthen monitoring of the presence of foreign nationals to ensure Indonesia does not become a destination for refugees or asylum seekers that do not comply with regulations.

“Do not let Indonesia become a place for refugees and asylum seekers. We must be selective,” he emphasised.

“If they visit to seek safety, that’s fine, but do not add problems for us,” he added.

The policy is part of the government’s efforts to balance humanitarian aspects and law enforcement in the immigration sector, particularly amid global dynamics affecting cross-border mobility of citizens.
