Foreign Ministry Yet to Receive Reports of Indonesian Citizens Affected by European Heatwave

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) has not yet received any reports regarding Indonesian citizens (WNI) being affected by the heatwave currently sweeping across Europe since late June.

Director of the Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry, Heni Hamidah, stated that Indonesian nationals in Europe remain safe, even as several countries have declared states of alert to face the heatwave.

“We have coordinated with our representatives there, and so far, no Indonesian citizens have been affected, reported, or fallen victim to the heatwave; that has not happened yet,” Heni Hamidah said in Jakarta on Wednesday, 1 July 2026.

Nevertheless, Indonesian diplomatic missions in European countries continue to urge Indonesian citizens to remain vigilant and take preventative measures to avoid the impacts of the heatwave.

On Sunday (28/6), Anadolu reported that the World Health Organization (WHO) recorded more than 1,300 additional deaths across Europe over the past week due to the extreme heatwave hitting the continent.

“More than 1,300 additional deaths have been recorded since 21 June related to high temperatures in Europe,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Ghebreyesus noted that heat stress is a “silent killer,” particularly as houses, workplaces, and schools in Europe are not designed to withstand such high temperatures.

The WHO is working alongside member states and partners to strengthen the preparedness, prevention, and response of health systems to extreme heat weather.
