Foreign Ministry Provides Assistance to Indonesian Migrant Worker in Libya
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) together with the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Tripoli are handling the case of an Indonesian migrant worker (PMI) with the initials AJ in Benghazi, eastern Libya. The handling of the case follows information that circulated widely on social media on 26 June 2026.
Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens (PWNI) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, stated that KBRI Tripoli has conducted a search and confirmed that AJ is currently in good condition. “KBRI Tripoli has confirmed that currently AJ is safe, healthy, and has not suffered any injuries,” Heni Hamidah said in an official statement on Sunday (28/6).
According to Heni, KBRI Tripoli continues to coordinate with various parties to obtain a complete picture of the incident. The investigation is being carried out together with the individual concerned, the employer, and other relevant parties. “KBRI Tripoli, together with related parties including AJ and the employer, is still conducting an in-depth investigation to obtain a complete picture of the chronology of the incident,” she stated.
Based on investigations conducted with a local agency, it is known that AJ has been working in Benghazi since March 2025. However, her placement was carried out through unofficial channels by the sponsor. “Based on investigations with the local agency, it is known that AJ has been working in Benghazi, eastern Libya, since March 2025 through a placement route that did not comply with official procedures by the sponsor,” Heni explained.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised that it will continue to coordinate with KBRI Tripoli, local authorities, and all related parties to ensure the case is handled properly and to provide protection to AJ. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through KBRI Tripoli, will continue to coordinate with related parties and local authorities for the handling of this case,” she said.
On this occasion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs once again reminded Indonesian citizens who wish to work abroad to use official placement channels in accordance with applicable regulations. This step is considered important to guarantee legal protection, workers’ rights, and safety while in the destination country. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs once again urges the public who plan to work abroad to use procedural channels in accordance with applicable regulations to ensure the protection of workers’ rights and safety,” Heni concluded.
