Foreign Ministry Continues to Monitor Seven Indonesian Crew Members on MV Star Janet in Chinese Waters
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to monitor developments in the case of seven Indonesian crew members aboard the MV Star Janet, which is currently experiencing technical difficulties in the waters off Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, China.
According to a written statement from the Directorate of Protection of Indonesian Citizens (PWNI) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received in Jakarta on Tuesday, the Indonesian Consulate General in Guangzhou has been coordinating intensively with the Guangdong Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) since the vessel was reported to be experiencing difficulties on 10 May 2026, in order to obtain the latest information on the condition of the ship and all its crew, particularly the seven Indonesian crew members.
“Through this coordination, the MSA succeeded in rescuing the MV Star Janet from Tropical Cyclone Butterfly and brought it to a safe location in the Guishan area,” said PWNI Director Heni Hamidah.
Heni said the MV Star Janet was reported to have suffered generator damage that resulted in a power outage, limited food supplies, and severed communication lines for the entire crew.
Regarding the technical difficulties, she explained that the Indonesian Consulate General in Guangzhou had coordinated with the company, which sent technical assistance on several occasions until the vessel was fully repaired at the end of July 2026.
In addition, the Indonesian Consulate General in Guangzhou also received reports concerning delays in the payment of crew wages.
Through coordination with the company, it was agreed that the crew’s wages would be paid promptly in mid-August 2026 before the vessel continues its journey.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Indonesian Consulate General in Guangzhou and the Directorate of PWNI, expressed appreciation to the Chinese Government and relevant Indonesian agencies for their good cooperation in handling the case.
