Foreign Ministry Confirms All Indonesian Citizens in Colombia Safe After 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that all Indonesian citizens currently in Colombia are safe after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the country on Monday (10/8).

“The Indonesian Embassy in Bogota has established communication with Indonesian citizens in several affected areas. Based on the embassy’s monitoring, all Indonesian citizens in Colombia are reported to be in safe condition,” said Heni Hamidah, Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a written statement issued in Jakarta on Tuesday, the ministry said the embassy would continue to monitor developments and coordinate with Indonesian citizens in affected areas, including emergency measures should aftershocks occur.

The powerful earthquake that struck Colombia was centred in the Choco region, approximately 280 km from Bogota, and was felt strongly in several parts of the country, including Bogota, Cali, Medellin, Pereira, Manizales, and Ibague.

The ministry also noted that the Colombian government has activated its national emergency response mechanism and established an Integrated Command Post to coordinate handling and needs assessment in affected areas.

The embassy has urged all Indonesian citizens in Colombia to remain vigilant, follow the instructions of local authorities, monitor information from official sources, and maintain communication with the embassy.

Meanwhile, Anadolu reported that at least 111 people were killed after the magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday (10/8).

Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella said the earthquake, which collapsed many buildings, also injured at least 87 people.

The disaster damaged 1,575 homes—37 of which were completely destroyed—as well as toppling 61 buildings and causing damage to 18 health service centres, 52 educational facilities, 17 community activity centres, and 18 road sections, he said.

The Colombian government has declared a national disaster status to strengthen institutional mobilisation and coordination in handling the emergency situation.
