Foreign Ministry Calls for Thorough Investigation into Incident in Lebanon

The government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu), has called for an investigation into the incident that killed one Indonesian National Army (TNI) soldier during a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. The call was issued through an official statement posted on social media platform X on Monday, 30 March 2026. “Indonesia strongly condemns the incident and calls for a thorough and transparent investigation,” stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday. The incident occurred due to indirect artillery fire near the position of the Indonesian contingent close to Adchit Al Qusayr on 29 March 2026, amid reports of escalating hostilities between the Israeli military and armed groups in southern Lebanon. The incident resulted in one soldier being killed and three others injured while serving in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission. Kemlu stated that Indonesia is working with UNIFIL to ensure the swift repatriation of the deceased’s remains and the best medical care for the injured personnel. Furthermore, Indonesia emphasised that the safety of UN peacekeepers must be fully respected in accordance with international law. Any actions endangering them are deemed unacceptable and undermine efforts to maintain peace and stability. Kemlu condemned Israel’s attacks in southern Lebanon and called on all parties to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The government demanded an end to attacks on civilians and infrastructure and encouraged a return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further escalation. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also condemned the incident. In a statement on platform X on the same day, Guterres noted that an Indonesian peacekeeper was killed in an event amid hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. Guterres mentioned that another Indonesian personnel suffered serious injuries. He expressed condolences to the Indonesian nation, particularly the victim’s family, and hoped for a speedy recovery for the injured personnel. According to him, the incident is part of a series of events endangering the safety of peacekeeping forces. “I call on all parties to fulfil their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety of UN personnel and property at all times,” said Guterres.
