Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir, known as Tata, has stressed that Indonesia will push for reform of the United Nations from within. The effort is intended to strengthen transparency, accountability and the effectiveness of the multilateral organisation, while giving developing countries a greater voice in global governance.

Tata said Indonesia was not merely calling for changes to the international system, but was also seeking to take part directly in efforts to improve multilateral institutions.

“We are not just knocking on the door from outside; we are helping to put the house in order from within,” Tata said in a press statement after handing over his post to Sugiono at the Pancasila Building, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta, on Monday, 12 October 2026.

According to Tata, UN reform is an important part of Indonesia’s efforts to promote a more effective and representative international system. The current multilateral system, he said, does not fully accommodate the interests of developing countries, or the Global South.

Strengthening Indonesia’s role on the UN Board of Auditors

One concrete step Indonesia is taking is to strengthen its role on the UN Board of Auditors. Its involvement is intended to help ensure that the international organisation upholds the principles of transparency and accountability.

Tata explained that Indonesia’s effort to secure the position began under former Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in 2022. The process was continued by Sugiono, and Indonesia was elected in 2025.

Tata said he would now ensure that the mandate was carried out properly.

A role on the UN Board of Auditors is one way for Indonesia to contribute to oversight and accountability within international organisations. Through this involvement, Indonesia can help promote more transparent and efficient governance.

For Indonesia, simply calling for multilateral reform through diplomacy is not enough. Direct involvement in international institutional mechanisms is also necessary to ensure that efforts to improve them can proceed from within.

Indonesia seeks UN Security Council seat for 2029–2030

In addition to strengthening its role on the UN Board of Auditors, Indonesia is also seeking election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2029–2030 term.

Tata said the candidacy was part of Indonesia’s efforts to promote a Security Council that is more effective, representative, transparent and democratic.
