Foreign Minister Sugiono to Depart for Iran to Attend Ali Khamenei's Funeral

Foreign Minister Sugiono, accompanied by Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani, is scheduled to attend the funeral ceremony of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The planned visit is a gesture of respect and aims to maintain good relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Sugiono explained that the government is still awaiting confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding the time and location that the Indonesian delegation can attend, as officials at the ambassadorial level are unable to participate in the funeral procession. “We plan to attend. We are still waiting for a response, the time, and the place where we can attend the funeral ceremony. As we know, there is a series of events related to the funeral,” Sugiono stated at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta on Monday (6/7/2026). Sugiono explained that communication between the Indonesian and Iranian governments is ongoing. He added that the immense respect the Iranian people hold for Ayatollah Khamenei has meant that organisers are still arranging a location that can accommodate visits from foreign delegations. “From the communications we continue to have, because the respect for him is so great, and the crowds are also very large there, the Iranian side is still trying to find a spot to receive these visits,” Sugiono said. He explained that the Indonesian government had previously received an invitation to attend the series of events. At the initial stage, Indonesia indicated that the Indonesian Ambassador to Iran, Roy Soemirat, would represent the government at the proceedings.
