Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono has revealed the worst-case risk of a war between the United States and Israel against Iran, saying the conflict could drag in more countries. He told reporters at the Fairmont Hotel in Jakarta on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, that the gravest risk would be a larger escalation involving more states.

Sugiono did not specify what further impacts might occur if fighting in the Middle East spread. However, he stressed the importance of de-escalating the conflict in the region. ‘We want there to be de-escalation. Then the situation would subside, right? And we have stated that we regret the failure of talks that subsequently caused the situation,’ he said.

Furthermore, Sugiono emphasised again the importance of all countries respecting the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of other nations, and called on all parties to show restraint. ‘The President himself has expressed his wish, his willingness to act as mediator if both sides agree and accept it. In short, we hope that the principles of international law, and the UN Charter, will continue to be respected,’ he added.

President Prabowo Subianto has conveyed condolences over the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, following the attack by the US and Israel. The condolence letter was conveyed to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The letter was handed over through Foreign Minister Sugiono to Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi. The moment of handing over the letter occurred during their meeting on Wednesday, 4 March.

‘Menerima kunjungan Yang Mulia Mohammad Boroujerdi, Duta Besar Iran untuk Indonesia (4/3),’ said Sugiono in a statement posted on the official Instagram account @menlu_ri.
