Foreign Minister Sugiono Reveals Worst-Case Consequences of Iran War

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Foreign Minister Sugiono outlined the worst-case risks of the war currently unfolding in Iran. He warned the conflict could widen by involving other countries.

‘The worst risk… the worst risk is an escalation that grows bigger and involves more countries,’ Sugiono told reporters at the Fairmont Hotel, Jakarta, on Wednesday, 4 March 2026.

To this end, Sugiono said the country wants tensions not to rise further. He also lamented the failure of negotiations in Geneva between Iran and the United States.

‘We want de-escalation. Then the situation will ease, right? We also said that… We regret the failure of the negotiations which then caused the situation. But we again emphasise the importance of all countries respecting the principles of sovereignty and the territorial integrity of other states,’ Sugiono said.

He also urged all parties to show restraint to prevent a wider war.

Furthermore, he said President Prabowo Subianto has offered to act as mediator, if Iran, Israel and the United States reach agreement.

‘His intention is to offer his willingness to become mediator if both sides agree and consent, yes,’ he said.

‘In short, we hope that the principles of international law and the UN Charter are respected,’ added Sugiono.
