Foreign Minister Sugiono: PM Narendra Modi's Visit Strengthens Indonesia-India Relations

Foreign Minister Sugiono has stated that bilateral relations between Indonesia and India are entering a new phase of strengthening. This is marked by the state visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Indonesia on Monday (6/7).

Minister Sugiono explained that the President personally welcomed PM Modi at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport as a form of respect and a symbol of the closeness between the two nations. The visit reciprocates a previous trip by the Indonesian President to India.

“This afternoon, the President welcomed visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is a form of enhancement, closeness, and cooperation between the two countries,” Sugiono told reporters at Halim Perdanakusuma, Jakarta.

This high-level meeting is scheduled to produce a number of concrete agendas. Sugiono mentioned that the two leaders will sign several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) in various strategic sectors, ranging from defence, education, and health, to technology development.

In addition to the diplomatic agenda at the Merdeka Palace and the State Palace, PM Modi is scheduled to visit Prambanan Temple on 8 July 2026. The visit relates to an agreement between the two countries in the field of cultural preservation, specifically efforts to restore the temple.

“One of the agreements reached between Indonesia and India is the effort to carry out the restoration of Prambanan Temple,” Sugiono added.

This visit is seen as a strategic step to strengthen the friendship between the two countries through strong chemistry between the heads of state. The cross-sector cooperation discussed is expected to have a direct impact on the progress of Indonesia and India in the future.
