Foreign Minister Sugiono Plans to Attend Ali Khamenei's Funeral in Iran on 9 July

Foreign Minister Sugiono has revealed plans to attend the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as a government representative on 9 July. His office is currently coordinating with the Iranian Government. “After that, we are also coordinating, and because the funeral will be held on Wednesday, the 9th, that is the plan,” Sugiono said at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta on Monday (6/7/2026). “We plan to attend. We are still awaiting confirmation of the time and place where we can attend the funeral ceremony, as we are aware there is a series of events related to the funeral of the Supreme Leader of Iran,” Sugiono continued. Sugiono stated that he would depart together with the Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly, Ahmad Muzani. “The plan is for the Indonesian Foreign Minister to depart with the Speaker of the MPR RI,” he said. Sugiono indicated that attendance at Khamenei’s funeral is highly likely, though he is still awaiting a technical response from the Iranian Government. “From the ongoing communications, because the respect for him is so great and the crowds there are also very large, the Iranian side is still trying to find the right point or spot to receive our visit,” he explained. Sugiono said Indonesia had previously received an invitation for the final tribute ceremony for Khamenei. At that time, the government dispatched the Indonesian Ambassador to Tehran to represent the country. “We received notification or an invitation regarding the event. At that time, we also stated that the Indonesian Ambassador to Iran would represent the Indonesian Government,” Sugiono said. “This was due to various technical considerations, as at that time we were also preparing for state visits in Indonesia and several key officials had commitments that made it impossible to go there,” he added. However, on 2 July, the government received information that Iran would only grant access to officials above the rank of ambassador. Due to time constraints, the government did not have the opportunity to send a replacement at that stage.
