Foreign Minister Sugiono Condemns Israel's Dehumanising Treatment of Detained Volunteers

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Foreign Minister Sugiono has condemned Israel’s treatment of the volunteers from Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 who were detained, saying the actions affront the dignity of civilians on a humanitarian mission and constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law that is not tolerable. He added that nine Indonesian nationals detained by Israeli forces have been released. The Indonesian government extends its utmost appreciation to Türkiye for its active involvement and full support in facilitating the repatriation of the nine Indonesians. He noted that this positive development is the result of close coordination between the Indonesian government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conducted intensively since the reports of the flotilla being interdicted by Israel were received. “This includes through the Indonesian Embassies and Consulates in Ankara, Cairo, Rome, Amman, and Istanbul, as well as maintaining active communication with authorities and international partners to ensure the safety and expedite the release of all Indonesian citizens,” Sugiono said. It is known that the nine Indonesians — comprising four journalists and five activists — were detained by Israeli forces while on a humanitarian maritime mission with Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0. According to information from Global Peace Convoy Indonesia, on Wednesday (20 May 2026) the nine Indonesians sent an SOS message via video statements confirming their detention.
