Foreign Minister Sugiono and MPR Speaker Ahmad Muzani Pay Final Respects to Ali Khamenei in Iran

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono paid his final respects to the late Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, at his final resting place in Mashhad, Iran, on Friday (10/7). The visit served as a symbol of solidarity and an effort to strengthen bilateral relations between Jakarta and Tehran. Through his official X account, Sugiono expressed deep condolences and appreciation for the role of the late Iranian leader. “Indonesia will remember His Excellency (Ali Khamenei) as a respected Islamic scholar and an important figure in the eternal friendship between Indonesia and Iran,” Sugiono stated, as monitored from Jakarta on Saturday (11/7). Sugiono affirmed that the friendship between the two countries would continue to be nurtured based on the principles of mutual respect and reciprocal support, especially during difficult times like the present. During the visit, the Indonesian delegation also visited the Holy Shrine Complex of Imam Reza in Mashhad. MPR Speaker Ahmad Muzani revealed that the delegation was welcomed directly by the Chief Custodian of the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza, Ayatollah Ahmad Marvi. Muzani explained that the tomb of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is located adjacent to the tomb of Imam Reza, the 8th imam in the Shia Muslim faith. The complex is known as one of the holiest sites in Iran, attracting millions of pilgrims from around the world each year. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang previously stated that this high-level visit was made at the official invitation of the Iranian government. In addition to the tribute agenda, the Indonesian delegation was scheduled to hold a series of strategic meetings with several high-ranking Iranian officials. This diplomatic initiative is expected to accelerate coordination between the two countries on various strategic issues, while ensuring the stability of relations amidst the evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East region.
