Foreign Minister Strongly Condemns Attack on Three Indonesian Peacekeepers in Lebanon
Foreign Minister Sugiono, representing the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, has conveyed deep condolences over the deaths of three TNI soldiers who were carrying out duties in the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. The statement was delivered during the final honours ceremony for the three soldiers’ remains in the VIP room at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, Banten, which took place in an atmosphere of profound sorrow and solemnity. “We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families. May the souls of these heroes of the nation be accepted by the Almighty God, and may their families be granted health and patience in facing this tragedy,” said Foreign Minister Sugiono on Saturday night (4/4/2026). The three fallen soldiers were the late Major Inf (Anm) Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, the late Sergeant (Anm) Muhammad Nur Ichwan, and the late Corporal (Anm) Farizal Rhomadon, who were part of the Garuda Contingent UNIFIL. Sugiono emphasised that the Indonesian Government, through its Permanent Representative in New York, has also requested the United Nations Security Council to hold an emergency meeting. “We strongly condemn the attack on peacekeepers and demand a comprehensive investigation,” the Foreign Minister asserted. He explained that peacekeeping forces have a mandate to maintain stability, not to conduct combat operations. “They are peacekeeping, not peacemaking. They are not equipped for offensive operations, so there must be security guarantees for the peacekeeping soldiers,” he clarified. Furthermore, Indonesia is also urging the UN to evaluate the protection system for peacekeeping forces. “We are asking the UN to evaluate the safety of peacekeeping soldiers, particularly in UNIFIL,” said the Foreign Minister. In closing his statement, he reiterated his condolences and hopes that the fallen soldiers receive the best place by God’s side. “Once again, we extend our deepest condolences. May the souls of those who have fallen be accepted by God, and may the bereaved families be granted patience,” he concluded.
