Foreign Minister Sugiono revealed that President Prabowo Subianto has held direct talks with Gulf state leaders regarding the escalation of the US–Israel war with Iran. Sugiono said the talks between leaders were conducted by telephone. ‘Already telephoned,’ he told reporters on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. However, he added that Prabowo has not yet spoken with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman. Contact has not been made because a suitable time could not be found; ‘Already telephoned and still waiting for a time with MBS; we have not been able to meet yet,’ he said.

Furthermore, Sugiono said he was not yet aware of the exact results of Prabowo’s discussions with those leaders.

It is known that Sugiono has also spoken to Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, regarding the escalating tensions in the Middle East. Sugiono said Indonesia is willing to play a constructive role in advancing peace, including offering its readiness to facilitate dialogue or mediation, with the common aim of preventing further escalation and stopping the unnecessary loss of innocent lives, he stated on his official X account on Tuesday, 3 March.

Moreover, Sugiono urged all parties to show restraint and pursue de-escalation. He called on all sides to uphold international law and the UN Charter. Dialogue and diplomacy, he said, are the only viable path to regional stability.
