Foreign Minister Plans to Attend Ali Khamenei's Funeral

Foreign Minister Sugiono has stated that the government plans to send a delegation to attend the funeral ceremony of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, scheduled for 9 July 2026. Sugiono mentioned that communication with Iranian authorities is ongoing to ensure the Indonesian delegation’s attendance proceeds in accordance with diplomatic and technical provisions on the ground. “The plan is for the Indonesian Foreign Minister to depart together with the Speaker of the MPR RI,” Sugiono told reporters at Halim Perdanakusuma on Monday (6/7). He emphasised that logistical factors and field conditions are being considered, given the large scale of the event and the high number of mourners expected to attend. “From the communications we continue to have, because the respect for him is so great, and the crowds there are very large, the Iranian side is still looking for the right point or location to receive our visit,” said Sugiono. The Indonesian government is currently awaiting technical confirmation from Iran regarding the time and location for the delegation, while ensuring Indonesia’s participation remains within the framework of diplomatic respect for the late Ali Khamenei. Sugiono explained that Indonesia had received an official invitation from the outset and appointed a representative to attend the event. Initially, Indonesia decided to be represented by the Indonesian Ambassador in Iran, considering various technical factors and the busy schedule of state events at home. “At that time we said that the representative of the Indonesian government would be the Indonesian Ambassador in Iran, with various technical considerations, because at that time we were also preparing for state visits in Indonesia and several key officials had schedules that did not allow them to go there,” Sugiono clarified.
