Foreign Minister Plans to Attend Ali Khamenei's Funeral
Foreign Minister Sugiono has stated that the government plans to send a delegation to attend the funeral ceremony of Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which is scheduled to take place on 9 July 2026.
The Foreign Minister noted that communications with Iranian authorities are ongoing to ensure that the Indonesian delegation’s presence adheres to diplomatic protocols and technical arrangements on the ground.
“The plan is for the Indonesian Foreign Minister to depart alongside the Speaker of the MPR RI,” Sugiono told reporters at Halim Perdanakusuma on Monday (6/7).
He emphasised that logistical factors and field conditions are significant considerations, given the massive scale of the event and the high number of mourners expected to attend. “From our continuous communications, because his respect is so great and the crowds there are very large, the Iranian side is still looking for the appropriate spot to receive our visit,” Sugiono said.
The Indonesian government is currently awaiting technical confirmation from Iran regarding the timing and location for the delegation’s presence, while ensuring that Indonesia’s participation remains within the framework of diplomatic respect for the late Ali Khamenei.
Sugiono explained that Indonesia had received an official invitation from the outset and had appointed representatives to attend the event. Initially, Indonesia decided to be represented by the Indonesian Ambassador to Iran, due to various technical considerations and a heavy domestic state agenda.
“At that time, we stated that the Indonesian government would be represented by the Indonesian Ambassador in Iran, considering various technical factors, as we were also preparing for state visits in Indonesia and several key officials had schedules that made travel impossible,” Sugiono explained.
Foreign Minister Sugiono and MPR Speaker Ahmad Muzani are scheduled to attend Ali Khamenei’s funeral in Iran on Thursday (9/7) following changes in access protocols.
