For Barcelona's Sake, Marcus Rashford Circumvents Manchester United's Financial Constraints

After securing the LaLiga title for the 2025-2026 season, Barcelona’s management is now focused on building its squad for the 2026-2027 season. One of the most pressing issues in the transfer market is the future of winger Marcus Rashford, who is currently on loan from Manchester United.

Coach Hansi Flick has reportedly given the green light to the management to retain Marcus Rashford at Camp Nou. However, a major obstacle arises from the financial side, as the demands from his parent club, Manchester United, are considered quite burdensome for the Spanish giant’s finances.

The 28-year-old striker is willing to extend his contract from three years to five seasons, or until 2032. By extending the duration, the €30 million transfer fee requested by Man United can be spread out over a longer period of annual amortisation. This will automatically ease the club’s annual accounting burden and ensure compliance with Financial Fair Play regulations in the Spanish league.

The former Manchester United academy graduate has demonstrated strong commitment by agreeing to a pay cut of up to 40%. The player took this concrete step because he feels very comfortable under Hansi Flick, especially after making significant contributions with 14 goals and 12 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions this season.

The Old Trafford side has closed the door on extending the loan deal and insists that the permanent purchase clause of €30 million be settled in cash before the deadline at the end of June. In addition, the management of the English club is reportedly unhappy with the player’s public statement to the media about his desire to stay in Spain.

This happened amid an internal team situation where the manager, Michael Carrick, had initially stated that the player was still part of his long-term tactical plans.
